Monkeys now off my back, says EC chief

(STAR) ALOR STAR: Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Rashid Abdul Rahman has called his detractors “monkeys” and said he was glad they were now off his back because they were “full”.

“I have said many times before that the elections are always free and fair. But they never believed me. Now the monkeys are quiet because they are full,” he said.

Rashid and the EC were the target of detractors during the general election.

However, he said the detractors had stopped criticising after the Opposition took control of five states and the majority of seats in the Federal Territories.

Rashid had been criticised by the Opposition on issues like whether the elections run by the EC was fair and balanced and the reasons for the extension of his term as EC chairman.

In response to criticisms of the EC being unfair which brought about several rallies by non-government organisations, Rashid had said the people should be allowed to judge their claims through the ballot box.

On talk of MPs defecting, Rashid said it was none of the EC’s business if MPs decided to join other parties.

“We will only be involved if by-elections are called,” he said.
