Zaid: Professionals will be on judicial commission

KOTA BARU: Members of the Judicial Appointment Commission will include professionals from the private sector to ensure judges are appointed fairly in future.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said the involvement of various levels of society, including senior judges, lawyers and professors, in the commission would help erase doubts over the integrity of the Malaysian judiciary.

"In future, we don't want people to still question the appointment of a judge," he said yesterday.

"The public is hoping for a fair system in the appointment of judges and not having to question whether the candidate has met the stipulated criteria or whether his elevation is based on the wishes of a certain individual."

He said the membership of the commission should not be all that different from those of other countries to demonstrate the government's seriousness in addressing the issue.

Zaid also stressed the need for co-operation from all parties so that consensus on the make-up of the commission could be achieved.

"If we place importance on certain groups only, it's impossible for us to have an effective judicial appointment commission."

Zaid said the government would look at commissions in other countries as examples to ensure that the Malaysian commission would be transparent and satisfy all quarters.

"The English model is good and so are the ones in some other European countries. Thailand and South Africa too have judicial systems that their people can be proud of. These are some of the models that we can refer to," he said. -- Bernama
